How to Care for Your Veritas Shop Rule

Even with a straightforward tool such as a rule, it’s helpful to know how to look after it.

Here are some tips for storing, cleaning and using your rule so it gives you many years of accurate service.

How should I store my shop rule?

Hanging the rule using its hang hole is a good option, especially for the longer rules. Of course, a tool chest or cabinet also works well, providing you have the space. The key point is to not let your rule jostle with other tools, or leave it lying about or propped up against a wall. And, since the rule’s ends are registration surfaces, it’s important to treat these with care, too.

My rule is dusty or dirty. How do I clean it?

The safest and most effective way to clean your rule is with a mild solution of soap and water, applied with a soft cloth. Anything abrasive, such as a cleaner or pad (even a very mild one), could damage the anodized finish.

Should I be aware of anything else?

The only other caution is to not use your rule as a cutting guide. Aluminum is relatively soft, and there’s a danger of nicking the edge of the rule with a sharp blade. Not the end of the world, but best not to risk it.
